Yuvraj Singh left out of NZ tour

Yuvraj Singh

He may not be a part of the cricket World Cup 2015 team, but allrounder Yuvraj Singh is still worth the money. Quite literally. The cricketer bagged a record Rs 16 crore (approx. $2.67 million) bid from the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. This is the second consecutive year when Yuvi has attracted a lucrative million dollar deal in the IPL.

The other million dollar purchases on Monday were Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews for Rs 7.5 crore (approx $1.25 million.) and India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik Rs 10.5 crore (approx. $1.75 million). Angelo Mathews was purchased by Daredevils while Royal Challengers Bangalore signed Dinesh Karthik.

While Yuvraj became the most expensive buy so far in the IPL 2015 player auction, South Africa Test captain Hashim Amla, Sri Lankan players Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene remained unsold in the marquee round of the auction.

The deepest pockets were those of Delhi Daredevils. The franchise was even involved in a bidding contest with Royal Challengers Bangalore for Yuvraj Singh. Yuvi was a part of RCB team last year (purchased for Rs 14 crore or approx. $2.33million) but was released ahead of the auction this time.

Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased some high profile English players like Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara. Hyderabad paid Rs 2 crore (approx. $330,000) for Pietersen – his base price, Rs 1.5 crore (approx. $ 250,000) for Morgan and Rs 1 crore (approx. $166,000) for Ravi Bopara. New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson was also bought by the Sunrisers for Rs 60 lakh (approx. $100,000) and fast bowler Trent Boult for Rs 3.8 crore ($633,000). The Sunrisers bought India’s Praveen Kumar for Rs 2.2 crore (approx. $366,000).

Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel and Irfan Pathan remained unsold.

MS Dhoni out of Asia Cup, Virat Kohli new captain

MS DhoniMUMBAI: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup, to be played in Bangladesh, in February-March. Dhoni sustained a Grade 1 left side-strain injury during the second Test match against New Zealand. Flamboyant batsman Virat Kohli will lead India in the tournament.

The Indian team returned home today after its dismal tour of New Zealand. The Men in Blue failed to win a single match in New Zealand.

Dhoni, whose captaincy has been a subject of intense criticism following India’s 0-1 defeat in the two-match Test series in New Zealand, will be undergoing rehabilitation for ten days.

The Selection Committee has picked Tamil Nadu’s wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Kartik as his replacement in the Indian squad. Criticism of MS Dhoni has grown louder with back to back series defeat in foreign tours. Many former players have been mulling replacing Dhoni as the captain of the Test squad

Dhoni captains Indian cricket team in all three formats of the game. His inability to take risks and play on the defensive has earned him criticism from senior players. Some also feel that captaining India in all three formats is putting too much of pressure on him and replacing Dhoni as captain of Tests will ease the burden from the captain Cool.

Who should replace Dhoni

While Virat Kohli’s performance easily puts him above the others as a claimant for the skipper’s shoes, Cheteshwar Pujara is being looked at as another option. Pujara just plays in Tests and will have enough time to think of only that format, some experts feel.

Review of Duncan Fletcher

Fingers are also being pointed towards Team India coach Duncan Fletcher who took up the mantle from South Africa’s Gary Kirsten when India were at the height after the 2011 World Cup victory. Many feel it is he who should be sacked and a new coach should be appointed.

India squad for Asia Cup:

Virat Kohli (Captain)

Shikhar Dhawan

Rohit Sharma

Cheteshwar Pujara

Ambati Rayudu

Ajinkya Rahane

Ravindra Jadeja

Dinesh Kartik (Wicketkeeper)

R Ashwin

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Mohammed Shami

Varun Aaron

Stuart Binny

Amit Mishra
