Team India win T20

Team India completed a magnificent run chase (India 200/3 against Aus 197/5), the second highest by any team against Australia in T20s, to win the final game by seven wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground Sunday. India won the T20 series 3-0 and are now at the top of T20 ranking.

Batting first, Australia put up a daunting total of 197/5 in 20 overs anchored by Shane Watson’s 124 in just 71 balls. India needed more than an ordinary good start to get to the total and Rohit Sharma (52 off 38 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (26 off 9 balls) gave the visitors the momentum that was needed right at the start of the inning. India charged to 45 runs in the first 3 overs of their inning.

Virat Kohli’s half century in 36 balls set the stage for the finish but Team India still needed a match winning effort from someone in the middle order. And Suresh Raina who is known for his power ranking in T20s delivered that part. Raina’s 49 not out off 25 balls included some clever cricket shots and a boundary of the last ball of the match.

Yuvraj Singh got his first chance to bat in the series and produced 15 runs off 12 balls in a pressure situation and mind you he is returning to international cricket after nearly two years. Yuvraj struggled initially but pulled himself up hitting a six and a four in the first two balls of the last over in which India needed 17 to win. After that it was up to Suresh Raina to finish the task and he did it in style with a boundary in the last ball of the match.

Virat Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Series for his consistent batting performance.

Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle has smashed a 12-ball-50 to equal Yuvraj Singh’s record of the fastest half century in a T20 game. Yuvraj Singh had set the record of the fastest 50 in Twenty20 in the 2007 World Cup against England in Durban. Yuvraj had smashed 6 sixes in an over of Stuart Broad in the match.

Gayle hit 7 sixes and 2 fours for Melbourne Renegades before he was dismissed for 56 off 17 balls in the semi final of the ongoing Big Bash League in Australia.

Melbourne Renegades needed 171 runs in 16 overs against Adelaide Strikers to qualify for Big Bash T20 league final. And Gayle started by hitting four consecutive sixes in Greg West’s first over. He reached his 50-run mark in the fourth over of Renegades’ innings.

The West Indies opener also holds the record for the fastest T20 century in the Indian Premier League. Chris Gayle had scored 100 in just 30 balls in the 2013 edition of the IPL while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

In spite of Gayle’s blistering half century, Renegades lost the semi-final and and crashed out of the Big Bash League. The Melbourne team fell 27 runs short of their target of 171

Chris Gayle was met with raucous applause by the crowd of 25,227 people in the Etihad Stadium as he walked off raising his bat after his dismissal. This could be the Jamaican’s farewell match if Cricket Australia decides not to welcome him back in the next edition of the cricket league.

IPL Auction 2015: Yuvraj Singh goes to Delhi Daredevils for Rs 16 crore

Yuvraj Singh left out of NZ tour

Yuvraj Singh

He may not be a part of the cricket World Cup 2015 team, but allrounder Yuvraj Singh is still worth the money. Quite literally. The cricketer bagged a record Rs 16 crore (approx. $2.67 million) bid from the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. This is the second consecutive year when Yuvi has attracted a lucrative million dollar deal in the IPL.

The other million dollar purchases on Monday were Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews for Rs 7.5 crore (approx $1.25 million.) and India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik Rs 10.5 crore (approx. $1.75 million). Angelo Mathews was purchased by Daredevils while Royal Challengers Bangalore signed Dinesh Karthik.

While Yuvraj became the most expensive buy so far in the IPL 2015 player auction, South Africa Test captain Hashim Amla, Sri Lankan players Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene remained unsold in the marquee round of the auction.

The deepest pockets were those of Delhi Daredevils. The franchise was even involved in a bidding contest with Royal Challengers Bangalore for Yuvraj Singh. Yuvi was a part of RCB team last year (purchased for Rs 14 crore or approx. $2.33million) but was released ahead of the auction this time.

Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased some high profile English players like Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara. Hyderabad paid Rs 2 crore (approx. $330,000) for Pietersen – his base price, Rs 1.5 crore (approx. $ 250,000) for Morgan and Rs 1 crore (approx. $166,000) for Ravi Bopara. New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson was also bought by the Sunrisers for Rs 60 lakh (approx. $100,000) and fast bowler Trent Boult for Rs 3.8 crore ($633,000). The Sunrisers bought India’s Praveen Kumar for Rs 2.2 crore (approx. $366,000).

Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel and Irfan Pathan remained unsold.

Virat Kohli takes India to World T20 final

DHAKA (BANGLADESH): India beat South Africa by 6 wickets in the semi-final of the World T20 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh, making the final of the tournament an all sub-continental affair.
Team India plays Sri Lanka in the final of the T20 tournament on April 6.

Harsha Bhogle asked Virat Kohli at the post match interaction how he does this all the time. And that in a way summed up what could have happened in the match. Batting first, South Africa scored 172 runs. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane gave a steady start but it was Viral Kohli and his splendid batting that guided India past the total of 172 runs without much to worry about. He scored 72 runs from 44 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes.

South Africa had some quality bowlers like Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel but they could not stop Indian batsmen from scoring runs.

“Virat is a splendid World Class player and a quality team like India deserves to be in the final,” South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said at the end of the match.

Virat Kohli has made the highest runs for India since 2012 in matches that India have won. Harsha Bhogle asked MS Dhoni if it was intentional to let Kohli score the winning runs and the Indian captain nodded in agreement. The background was this: Suresh Raina got out in the second last over of the match and Dhoni came in and was on strike for the last ball when the score was tied. He defended it without any intention of running for a single. This was to allow Virat to come back on strike in the last over and score the winning runs.

Virat Kohli hit a boundary of the first ball of the last over taking India past South Africa’s total of 172 runs.

“Virat has been very consistent and not many players have such consistency. Youngsters should learn from him,” MS Dhoni said in praise of the Indian vice-captain.

India now play Sri Lanka in the final and one cannot ignore the comparisons being made with the 2011 World cup final in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Yuvraj Singh said it was important for him to spend time on the field and bat till the end and it worked in the match. When Navjot Singh Sidhu asked him about Dhoni’s faith in him, Yuvraj Singh said that he and Dhoni have won a number of matches for India and it could be that the confidence came from that.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni complimented the bowlers at the post match press conference. “Having three fantastic spinners in my team gives me the option of using them as and when required and Suresh Raina pitches in whenever needed,” MS Dhoni said.

Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from today’s match and Ajinkya Rahane replaced him as the opener. Rahane however made 19 runs and failed to convert the start that he got.

India Vs Pakistan is expected to be high-voltage

DHAKA: India and Pakistan start their campaign in the ICC World Twenty20 with a high-octane match. The two arch rivals will face-off in their first game of the tournament at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on March 21.
Addressing a press conference in Dhaka, Indian opener Rohit Sharma said Yuvraj Singh has been a match winner for the team and his experience would strengthen its batting order.

Having defeated India in the Asia Cup two weeks ago, Pakistan are one of the title favourites in the tournament. He said Pakistani bowlers would look to attack Indian batsmen.

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Umar Akmal too stressed on India’s strong batting. Opener Ahmed Shehzad however said that no team should be taken lightly at this level of the game.

Although Pakistan and Australia start as title favourites, Indian talisman MS Dhoni’s return to the team has given strength to the side. The hero of Pakistan’s win over in the Asia Cup, Shahid Afridi, is also likely to join his team on Monday making Friday’s clash between the most volatile rivals evenly poised.
