Kapil Dev is wrong in saying Sachin didn’t do justice to his talent

Kapil Dev

Former India captain Kapil Dev has stirred up a hornet’s nest by arguing that cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar didn’t do justice to his talent.

“Sachin was a much better cricketer but somewhere along the line he just knew how to score hundreds. He didn’t know how to make it a double hundred, or a triple or even 400s,” Khaleej Times quoted Kapil Dev as saying.

The all-rounder, under whose captaincy India won the 1983 World Cup, added he would have advised Tendulkar to play like Virender Sehwag.

While Kapil Dev may be entitled to his personal opinion, there are certain things that he seems to forget in making such arguments. Sachin is respected across the world, by the greats who played this game, not only because of his cricketing skills but because he displayed them in his batting.

Tendulkar mostly played at a time when there was no Virat Kohli to take care of the batting when he was out. The master blaster took the task of shouldering the responsibility of India single-handedly in the 90s. If we can recall the era, Sachin’s early wicket usually meant all the other Indian batsmen fell like a pack of cards. Sachin played grounded shots applying his perfect technique to the best deliveries fired at him when expectations from him were sky high. In fact higher than any other player in cricket history.

To Kapil Dev’s point that Sachin could have made 200, 300 or even 400, he seems to forget that making 100 hundreds is no small task in cricket and reflects much more consistency, performance and ability to dominate bowlers.

It is amusing that Kapil Dev feels Sachin should have played like Virender Sehwag when Sehwag himself has said on numerous occasions that he has learnt a lot from Sachin.

That is the reason, the other cricket icons present at the event – Shane Warne, Wasim Akram and Ian Botham – did not seem to agree with Kapil’s view.

Shane Warne remarked Sachin was special and the best batsman he played against. “Sachin is a wonderful player and in my 20-odd years of playing, he is the best batsman that I played against. The expectations he was under and the skill he had against fast and spin. The way he judged the balls. He was great for the game of cricket and he was a fantastic and wonderful player. He dominated bowlers in the mid-90s and he was just outstanding against any bowler. He also played exceptionally well against Australia,” said Warne.

Arjun Tendulkar

When the English cricket team practiced at Lord’s for the second Investec Ashes Test beginning Thursday, a 15-year-old left-arm seamer was seen bowling at them. Not that the England batsmen were aware of the surname of Arjun Tendulkar who had joined the other bowlers at the nets to help the English cricket team prepare for the upcoming Test match against Australia. But young Arjun, son of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, was surely impressive maintaining a good line and length throughout the training session. His bowling action was also pleasing.

It was surely not the ideal preparation for England’s batsmen who will be facing the left-arm pace attack of Mitchell Johnson on the cricket pitch. But Arjun Tendulkar seemed quite happy with the accomplishment. England assistant coach Paul Farbrace was seen congratulating the young talent at the end of the training session.

Arjun also chatted with some of the England players and they were surprised when they came to know about his age, according to ESPN Cricinfo.

Sachin was a regular at the MCC Academy when he was part of the Indian cricket team and now it is his son Arjun who uses facilities of the club which is based at Lord’s cricket ground.

The Tendulkar family has an apartment near Lord’s and it is often spotted there during this time of the year. It was at the request of Neil Burns, the former county keeper, who is a friend of Sachin Tendulkar, that Arjun was allowed to bowl at the nets.

MUSSOORIE: Sachin’s beautiful daughter Sara Tendulkar was spotted with her parents and younger brother Arjun in northern India’s popular hill station Mussoorie recently. As we all know, 17-year-old Sara has been attracting attention and gaining immense popularity with her elegance and style.

Sara’s simple yet stunning look has put her in the spotlight and she is being touted as the next big thing in the world of glamour and glitz. There are several Facebook fan pages and Twitter handles dedicated to Sara Tendulkar, who is often seen accompanying father Sachin and mother Anjali Tendulkar in parties. She is at times compared to Alia Bhatt who had made her acting debut with Bollywood film Student Of The Year at the age of 19.

Recently, there were rumours that Sara will be seen in a Bollywood movie opposite Shahid Kapoor but father and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar dispelled such speculations rather angrily.

My daughter Sara is enjoying her academic pursuits. Annoyed at all the baseless speculation about her joining films, Sachin had tweeted.

Well, whatever dad may say, the paparazzi have it that Sara is the cutest celebrity daughter around.

Mumbai Indians are IPL champions

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have won the eighth edition of the Indian Premier League somewhat in the same fashion as their victory in the 2013 edition of the IPL. It was the same ground – Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, the same opposition – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that Mumbai Indians triumphed over. What was different and historical is the remarkable turnaround that the Rohit Sharma led side managed to achieve after their dismal start to the tournament, losing their first five matches and being at the bottom of the points table for the first two weeks of this edition of the IPL.

MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to field first but the decision did not pay off as Rohit Sharma and Lendl Simmons launched an onslaught forcing the Chennai Super Kings into submission. Parthiv Patel was run out early by Faf du Plessis’ brilliant fielding but after Rohit Sharma walked in there was no stopping the Mumbai Indians.

Rohit Sharma scored 50 off 26 balls while Simmons’ 68 came of 45 deliveries as Mumbai Indians put up a total of 202/5 in 20 overs. Kieron Pollard continued his consistent batting performance and added 36 of just 18 balls he faced getting good support from Ambati Rayudu (36 of 24 balls).

With a big target of 203, Chennai Super Kings needed to fire right from the beginning and the lack of depth in batting in the CSK camp was evident. Dwayne Smith did reach half century but a strike rate of little over run a ball was not enough for CSK. Suresh Raina too could manage just 28 of 19 balls while MS Dhoni was bowled by Lasith Malinga for 18.

In the end, Chennai Super Kings just managed to reach 161 runs for the loss 8 wickets in their chase in the #IPLFinal. Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani was all praise for the team.

MS Dhoni retires from Test cricket after India lose Australia series

Indian skipper MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket Tuesday after the third Test against Australia ended in a draw in Melbourne. Virat Kohli will lead the Indian team as captain in the final Test match against Australia in Sydney. India have already lost the four match Test series.

The announcement came as a surprise to cricket fans as Dhoni made no mention of his decision during the match or at the post match press conference. It was only after the PC that the Board of Control for Cricket in India sent a press release revealing Dhoni’s decision.

The release cited “strain of playing all formats of cricket” as the reason behind Dhoni’s sudden decision.

The press release stated: “One of India’s greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the test rankings, MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket,” the board said. “BCCI, while respecting the decision of MS Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India. Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian team for the fourth and final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney.”

Soon after the announcement, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, “Well done on a wonderful career in test cricket @msdhoni. Always enjoyed playing together. Next target 2015 WC my friend!!”

Although 2014 has not been a very fruitful year for MS Dhoni – he averaged 33 in 17 innings this year and suffered from fitness issues – MS has been the most successful captain of the Indian cricket team. India have won 27 Tests out of 60 under Dhoni’s captaincy and enjoyed No 1 Test ranking position from 2009 till the tour of England in 2011. Dhoni has scored most runs (3454) than other India captains, holds the record of highest individual score (224) by an Indian skipper or wicket-keeper, most dismissals and catches by an Indian wicket-keeper.

Dhoni has also played more number of matches than any other cricketer since 2008 after he took over as captain of Team India. He not only led the Men in Blue in all three formats of cricket but also the Chennai Super Kings IPL franchise and played in the Champions League T20. The former captain has played whopping 398 matches since the start of 2008.

Atletico De Kolkata win ISL Final, become 1st Champion

atletico Kolkata winisl

Atletico De Kolkata that is partly owned by former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly clinched the inaugural edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) defeating Kerala Blasters 1-0 in the final in Mumbai on Saturday.

Mohammad Rafique, who replaced Mohammad Rafi in the 74th minute, netted a header, in the 90th minute, just before the game dragged on to extra time. And that was enough to help his side become the first champion of the ISL – ending the long wait of Kolkata for a major football title.

That 22-year-old Mohammad Rafique had only made a single five-minute substitute’s appearance before this did not matter any longer as he was adjudged the hero of the match by the enthusiastic Atletico De Kolkata fans here at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and in Kolkata as also around the country. The little known East Bengal player has shot to instant fame.

The win holds significance as Kolkata – known as the “Mecca” of Indian football – has been bereft of a major title for almost a decade. The victory was also a revenge of sorts as Kerala Blasters had defeated Atletico De Kolkata 2-1 in the return leg of the round robin stage in Kochi.

For Atletico De Kolkata, it was not just Mohammad Rafique’s heroics that sealed the game in their favour. If Rafique was the match winner, Edel Bete – donning the goalkeeper’s gloves because of benched skipper Luis Garcia’s hamstring injury – was the match saver for Kolkata. He brought off a number of impressive saves diverting a powerful strike from Michael Chopra diving to his left.

Sachin Tendulkar, co-owner of Kerala Blasters, had words of consolation, for his team telling the players that they had won hearts. But in the end, the ISL is Kolkata’s cup of joy.

Lions at Gir

Having retired from International cricket, legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar is enjoying his time with family and friends. The master blaster visited Gujarat’s Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, the sole home of Asiatic lions. He was lucky to get sight of a number of big cats in the forest.

Sachin appreciated the Gujarat forest department for conservation of the species especially lions and described his visit as a ‘nice experience’. He was accompanied by his wife Anjali Tendulkar, daughter Sarah, son Arjun and a few friends.

“I have been hearing about Gir Forest since my school days but coming here and visiting the forest was a different kind of experience especially with my family. I learnt a lot. I congratulate Gir Forest authorities for their commitment in preserving lions and thank them for sharing their knowledge with me,” the Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament told reporters after coming out from the forest area.

The former cricketer credited the local people for their support in protecting the lions whose number has been growing.

Asked if he had any plan to campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Sachin Tendulkar replied in the negative.

Sachin Tendulkar: I have full faith in Team India

March 15, 2014 by newshourindia Leave a Comment

vlcsnap-2014-03-15-09h11m03s102MUMBAI: Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar unveiled a special lot of silver coins with his face, signature and name embossed on them in Mumbai, Friday. The collection is launched by Valuemart Gold & Jewels, in association with Diamond India.

Speaking on the occasion, the Bharat Ratna awardee said, “I have no hesitation in saying we are a talented side and there are some special players in the team. I know that they have not been able to produce the kind of results or rather live up to the expectation of the people, but things can change.”

The World Cup would be held in Australia and New Zealand in February-March next year.

“This is the time when the team requires support. When you are winning, you are in a good frame of mind but when you are not winning and when you know a billion people are behind you, with you, the mindset changes immediately. I have full confidence in our team. I am sure we will have a good time,” said that cricket legend.

He also underlined that things have changed a lot in the field of cricket.

The master blaster, who used to get “five paisa as pocket money” when he was growing up, also recalled how the Indian team had struggled before finishing runners-up to Australia in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

“I remember in 2003, the New Zealand tour before we got to the finals (of World Cup) wasn’t a great one for us. We went to South Africa and there were some side matches that we lost. And then we all started thinking that we need to plan differently, play differently and it worked for us,” said Tendulkar.
