NEW DELHI: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N Srinivasan has finally been dismissed and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has been asked to take over as interim chief of the BCCI by the Supreme Court.
The SC gave this order today in the IPL spot fixing scandal. The seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which starts on April 16 will be held as per schedule. The fate of Sundar Raman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Premier League and allegedly an India Cements employee, will be decided by new BCCI president Sunil Gavaskar, the apex court ordered.
Gavaskar would stay BCCI president till IPL-7 after which BCCI vice-president Shivlal Yadav may be asked to take over the top job. In a relief to Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the Supreme Court did not bar them from participating in the IPL championship as suggested on Thursday.
The Supreme Court also noted that Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was innocent and his name was unnecessarily being dragged into the spot fixing controversy.
The SC had suggested on Tuesday that Srinivasan should step down as the BCCI chief for a free and fair probe in the betting and spot-fixing scandal that involves his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and some cricketers. Srinivasan however did not budge and has been waiting for the top court to pass an order to this effect.
A Supreme court-appointed committee, headed by former Punjab and Haryana chief justice Mudgal, found Meiyappan guilty of match-fixing and betting during IPL 2013.
The next hearing in the case will be on April 16.
