Will castration of rapists curb sex crimes against women? Excerpts from a Facebook conversation

October 26, 2015 by newshourindia Leave a Comment

Castration3

A Facebook post praising Madras High Court’s recommendation to the Centre to consider castration as punishment for child rapists has evoked strong reactions on social networks. Here’s one such conversation on Facebook.

Shikha Pushpan, a journalist who works with a television news agency, praised the Madras High Court’s recommendation in an update on her Facebook profile: “Thumbs up to Madras HC that suggested castration for child rapists! But why just child rapists? Why not all rapists? Castration looks barbaric, but barbaric crimes should definitely attract barbaric model of punishment.”

Shikha’s suggestion earned support of friends in way of Facebook Likes. But there were words of caution too.

Shobha Rana Grover comments: 10 years ago I thought the same: castration for all rapists. However, my thoughts have drastically changed, and not without reason. As I noticed, most of the rapists convicted were from a particular strata of society… When the accused were peasants, labourers, very poor men, justice was instance. But things were different when the accused had power n money. The victim had difficulties even to get the case registered. Post Nirbhaya, case registration at police station has become easier, but not the whole process of justice when the accused is highly influential… Clearly, we have highly flawed system, including judiciary… And then there’s a different dimension to rape in urban India…

Shobha Rana Grover: Recently I came across a report that said 50 per cent of rape cases registered in Delhi were fabricated… How? Rape cases are filed not just when a woman is violated… Rape cases are filed when a couple returns home after having eloped. Girl’s family pressurizes police to register an FIR for rape (to take revenge or whatever on the boy) and one needs only a medical certificate claiming the couple had sexual intercourse… So the guy is a rapist even if the sex was consensual…

Rape cases are filed when a live-in relationship goes awry… There have been many instances where women have filed rape cases against their live-in partners (yes in Delhi and NCR) because they were saying no to marriage… And then these men and women generally reach a mutual agreement, and the case is withdrawn, after their female partners are paid a huge amount of money…So, castration is definitely not the answer.

Dipu Shaw comments: Along with this there are fabricated cases of rape that are filed after mutual sex. There are numerous examples. Like girls in cities especially Delhi see this as a tool to harass boys. I have friends whose girlfriends threaten them and their families that they will file cases against their boyfriends or ex-boyfriends and their families and make them spend the rest of their lives in prison. Some of them even demanded money (few lakhs) to let go the guys. Believe me, such phenomenon is increasing in Delhi. In spite of this, strict laws as castration will act as deterrent and violence of such heinous nature should have punishment of somewhat equal degree. Only that, the law should also have provisions to safeguard innocent guys and their families from unnecessary harassment. In fact, there should be punishment for fabricated cases. I do not know how this is possible when the law is heavily tilted towards women and rightly so. I have heard of a well-known woman activist who takes up cases and helps boys and their families.

Shikha Pushpan adds: Rapists should be convicted irrespective of their social backgrounds. Belonging to a weaker section does not mean he can escape punishment. If he has violated a woman, he should be punished. But at the same time, yes our judicial system is flawed. Many accused from well-to-do families go unpunished. But my point is a stricter punishment like castration will at least instill sum fear in these sex maniacs. A faster trial court cannot be the only solution. Yes, the Uber driver was probably convicted in less than an year because of this but rape cases have not gone down despite such measures. I guess we should focus more on prevention of rape than on what to do with the rapist after the crime takes place. I feel castration is a bold step in this regard.

Shobha Rana Grover: Do you guys remember the recent case in Gurgaon… Two top cops fighting over a rape case… Gurgaon JCP Bharti Arora had accused her senior and Gurgaon Commissioner Navdeep Virk of interfering in the investigation. Virk had accused her of harassing the “rape victim”… I was actually intrigued by the case because I had earlier too read the alleged rapist’s name but in a different report in August. Of course the identity of the “rape victim” was not revealed in any of the reports. I became curious and dug up some old news articles and found that the same “rape victim” had accused Mr X of molestation in 2011… She withdrew the case in 2013… in 2014 she filed a rape case against a Gurgaon guy with whom she shared a live-in relationship and also had a kid. After three years of living together, the Gurgaon guy refused to marry her saying he didn’t want to divorce his wife. So the woman filed a rape case against him, and it’s the same case that became the bone of contention between Bharti and Virk. Now comes in picture the third alleged rapist. This year in January, same woman filed a rape case against a US citizen of Indian origin. Yes, both were living-in. The rapist alleges that the victim is asking Rs 5 crore to withdraw the case. One woman, three known rape cases in three different police stations in Delhi, NCR (may be there are more case she has filed). All the rape accused are men from wealthy families…

Shikha Pushpan: Yeah, a typical case of misusing the law and taking advantage of being a “woman”. Sadly, the female cop was transferred after dis controversy.

Background

Justice N Kirubakaran of the Madras High Court had suggested child rapists should be castrated as existing laws had proved to be “ineffective and incapable” in protecting children. The High Court made this remark while rejecting a plea by a British national accused of sexually abusing a boy.

Three girls, a two-and-half year old toddler and another five-year-old among them, were raped in Delhi earlier this month. Two teenage boys – aged 16 and 17 years – have been arrested in connection with the toddler’s rape.

According to statistics, an average of four children under the age of 12, are raped in the capital every week.

Facebook’s Digital India profile tool not linked to net neutrality

September 29, 2015 by Dipu Shaw Leave a Comment

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

PM Modi and Zuckerberg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and then his visit to Google headquarters was much talked about in mainstream and social media.

Ahead of the Townhall interaction, Mark Zuckerberg tinted his Facebook profile picture with Indian tricolour in support of Narendra Modi’s Digital India campaign. The Indian PM thanked him on his official Facebook page saying “Thanks Mark Zuckerberg for the support. I changed my DP in support of the efforts towards a Digital India.” Modi’s profile picture too was then draped in the Indian tricolour.

The new Tricolour profile picture was adopted by lakhs of Facebook users in India within hours. However a ‘tech’ website called NextBigWhat argued in a story that colouring Facebook profile pictures with the Indian tricolor to support Digital India campaign was a hidden agenda of the social networking giant to garner support for its controversial internet.org programme.

We all know the fear and frenzy created by the net neutrality debate in India and Facebook’s internet.org was at the thick of it. The US-based social networking site had partnered with telecom major Reliance Communications to offer free access to over 30 Websites without data charges to users in India – a platform that was seen as violating the principle of Net neutrality.

NextBigWhat said in the article: “For Facebook, supporting ‘Digital India’ directly translates to marketing of Internet.org in the country. This ain’t any novel initiative – a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” All hell broke lose after the article was published on the website.

Catch News called the NextBigWhat piece “an eye opening investigation” and based its own story on it with a title: “Does Modi know of Zuckerberg’s trick behind the tricolour Facebook profile picture?”

It reproduced the ‘source code’ of Facebook’s Support Digital India page from the NextBigWhat article which seemed the only ‘document’ to corroborate their claim.

MenXP, an Indian lifestyle website, which belongs to Times Internet group did the same thing in an article “Your Facebook Tricolor Profile Picture Doesn’t Support Digital India; Here’s The Ugly Truth.”

Other smaller websites followed suit and now this erroneous report is being widely circulated on social media with netizens venting their anger against Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Source Code

Now, about the Support Digital India Source Code that has the word “_internetOrgProfilePicture_” in it. If one visits Facebook.com/supportdigitalindia page and inspects the Page element, it shows Class=“_internetOrgProfilePicture_” among numerous other things. Now, this is just a CSS Class name as the code itself mentions. And anyone with basic knowledge of CSS or HTML or website building will know that a Class name is just a Shorthand name that developers choose. This in no way can register support for internet.org as the flawed articles claim.

The articles presumed that just mention of the words InternetOrg in Source Code of Support Digital India page meant Facebook was deceiving Indian people into supporting its controversial project while in reality this was not the case.

In fact, Mark Zuckerberg too has a tricolor draped profile picture and said in an update: “I changed my profile picture to support Digital India, the Indian government’s effort to connect rural communities to the internet and give people access to more services online. Looking forward to discussing this with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Facebook today.” It is therefore unlikely that this move by the head of a multi-national corporation is to deceive Indian people and Prime Minister Modi.

It must be recalled that Facebook has already made its submission in support of its internet.org project to India’s Department of Telecommunications over a month ago. And changing profile pictures does not amount to “supporting Facebook’s initiatives and in the process, stifling innovation in the country,” as one report puts it.

If Facebook were to trick us into taking our digital consent for its internet.org, it could quietly do it when we just signed into our accounts rather than when we changed our DPs to support Digital India.

Suspense1

We have been sharing with our readers a number of jokes worth forwarding on Whatsapp and other messaging services and also Facebook. And this latest one is the best suspense joke till date😜. Please share on Facebook and other social networks as this will help us and keep us going.
A Father was lying down on bed with his three-year-old daughter. He told her a story and listened to her prayers which ended by saying,
“God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma and good-bye Grandpa.”

The father asked his daughter, ‘Why did you say good-bye Grandpa?’

The little girl replied, “I don’t know daddy, it just seemed like the thing to do.”

The next day grandpa died.

The father thought it was a strange coincidence.

A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this,
“God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and good-bye Grandma.”

The next day the grandmother died.

“Holy crap” thought the father, “This kid is in contact with the other world.”

Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say, “God bless Mommy and good-bye Daddy.”

He practically went into shock. He couldn’t sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office.

He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch and watched the clock.. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay.
He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived; he breathed a sigh of relief and went home.

When he got home his wife said,
“I’ve never seen you work so late. What’s the matter?”

He said, “I don’t want to talk about it, I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.”

She said, “You think you had a bad day, you’ll never believe what happened to me. This morning my boss died in the middle of a meeting 😜😝😝😂😂

KFC serves ‘deep-fried rat’ instead of chicken to customer

June 17, 2015 by Dipu Shaw Leave a Comment

KFC-fried-rat

A customer in California has posted a video on Facebook claiming that KFC served him a deep fried rat. The video and the picture uploaded by Devorise Dixon has gone viral on social networks and sparked a wide-spread furor.

The customer, Devorise Dixon, was quoted by news websites as saying he was served ‘a strangely shaped chicken breast’ which he purchased from KFC’s outlet in Watts, California, in the United States. But on closer inspection he spotted a ‘tail’ that later turned out to be a fried rat.

The Mirror had a quote from Dixon: “As I bit into it I noticed that it was very hard and rubbery which made me look at it. As I looked down at it I noticed that it was in a shape of a rat with a tail.

“It sent deep chills throughout my whole body! I’ve been feeling weird ever since. It’s time for a lawyer, be safe don’t eat fast food!”

Kentucky Fried Chicken has however denied the customer’s claim. A KFC representative said, “Following an immediate investigation, no evidence was found to support this claim,”

This is not the first time that KFC’s standards have been questioned. There have been reports in the past about KFC being infested with rats.

The report follows a nationwide ban on Nestle’s Maggi noodles in India after tests deemed them to contain “unsafe and hazardous” amounts of lead.

Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has claimed that the products from popular Indian snack brand, Haldiram, have ‘pesticides and other harmful bacteria in high levels’ and declared them unfit for consumption.

MUSSOORIE: Sachin’s beautiful daughter Sara Tendulkar was spotted with her parents and younger brother Arjun in northern India’s popular hill station Mussoorie recently. As we all know, 17-year-old Sara has been attracting attention and gaining immense popularity with her elegance and style.

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

Sara’s simple yet stunning look has put her in the spotlight and she is being touted as the next big thing in the world of glamour and glitz. There are several Facebook fan pages and Twitter handles dedicated to Sara Tendulkar, who is often seen accompanying father Sachin and mother Anjali Tendulkar in parties. She is at times compared to Alia Bhatt who had made her acting debut with Bollywood film Student Of The Year at the age of 19.

Recently, there were rumours that Sara will be seen in a Bollywood movie opposite Shahid Kapoor but father and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar dispelled such speculations rather angrily.

My daughter Sara is enjoying her academic pursuits. Annoyed at all the baseless speculation about her joining films, Sachin had tweeted.

Doc whose blog “My child can be pole dancer but not doctor” went viral draws flak

May 20, 2015 by RAJ KIRAN Leave a Comment

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Doctor

The Kerala doctor, whose blog post about why he would not allow his son to follow his steps, had gone viral on social networking sites, is also earning criticism from some quarters. Dr Roshan Radhakrishnan, an anaesthesiologist in Kerala, had shot to instant fame for a blog post titled, “Why I will never allow my child to become a doctor in India”.

The medic offered plenty of reasons justifying his point and had gone on to say that his child could be a pole dancer but not a doctor.  His blog post has been shared over 30, 000 times on Facebook and has been covered by prominent media houses like Huffington Post, Deccan Chronicle, Navbharat Times, Asianet, NDTV, Scroll and also Scoopwhoop, and Quartz.

It must be mentioned here that the doctor patient ratio in India is 0.7 doctors per 1000 Indians which is even below the WHO-prescribed limit of 1:1000

Reprimanding Dr Roshan Radhakrishnan, senior Indian journalist NB Nair has expressed his disappointment on Facebook.

Here’s what NB Nair has written:

Dear Dr Roshan Radhakrishnan,

Your blog must have gone viral on social networking sites, made news in media and your realisation about your profession could have shaken many. But I felt very disappointed (I know my disappointment doesn’t matter for you) because I consider, if there is any profession that has a godly touch, it is doctors’. I say this with full conviction and understanding, as I interact with some of the best medical professionals in the world.

Soldiers die to enemy bullets on the line of duty, they draw salary not proportional to the risks in life, but not one parent of our martyrs have said, they regret sending their son to armed forces. I have heard them saying, “If we had another son, we would have sent him also to army”.

For you Dr. Roshan, material comfort seems to be your priority in life, not saving the life of a fellow human being. You could have chosen a course correction. Who prevented you? Even now, I suggest, you should go for something that gives you happiness, but don’t take it upon yourselves to counsel the rest not to join the profession.

I would narrate an incident. In late 1970s, judges of subordinate courts in Delhi went on strike demanding better wages and facilities. When the Registrar of Delhi High Court called representatives of striking judges, they rued, banana-vendors outside the court premises earn more than judges. The Registrar shot back, ‘Why don’t you sell bananas instead?’ You choose a profession, with full understanding of its pros and cons. You can’t grudge if it turn out to be out of sync with your heart. I repeat, doctors are godly (there could be devils too) and you know very well my reason for saying so.

I may be a bit crude…but such thoughts are bound to germinate, when people pay 40-60 lakhs or more for medical admission and they find the remuneration they get after passing out is not equivalent to even the interest on investment.

A fellow medical practitioner, Dr. Natarajan Ganesan too criticises Radhakrishnan.

Convenient parable to begin with. Nowhere do I see you addressing the root (rather – roots) of the malaise.

BTW what exactly did you mean by the statement you made – “just to watch her lose her sense of right and wrong”. I guess that is where I like you to begin.

Am I to guess that after entering the profession, there is prevailing order for the medics to just become that? i.e. lose your sense of right and wrong. If so what are the reasons that lead a medic into this. Is it the thing to ‘specialize’ in an area where there is a ‘demand’ OR is it to join the herd i.e. big hospitals where they ‘pay well’, and then get sucked into the dictats of the ‘management’ OR is it the heady/complacent feeling of becoming unaccountable  for all the mistakes (even unavoidable or otherwise) OR ‘break even’ ASAP for all the investment into getting the degree … There are so many ORs I can start to pen that might it very uneasy. I thought you would have boldly penned those.

Sure! I cannot and won’t deny the numbers (which I haven’t checked BTW) of crazy doctor-to-patient ratio OR the pressure from unwanted quarters to get that ‘odd certificate’ or ‘result’ and many more (which you have also covered). But I feel a topic as touchy as this needs to be deeply self-introspective as well on the way the profession itself has become.

Congrats to your 15 min of fame (in getting this post viral) and I do really hope and pray you do well in your profession. Thanks for the clarification that you dont have kids ‘cos if you did you wouldn’t have penned the article so boldly.
