Usain Bolt produced a stunner at the ongoing 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing to retain his 100m world title. Bolt completed his run in 9.79 seconds snatching victory by a narrow margin of one hundredth of a second from rival and tournament favourite Justin Gatlin.
In Sunday’s final, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt was facing United States’ Justin Gatlin for the first time since 2013 and with 28 straight unbeaten 100m races, the controversial Gatlin was heavily favoured. A stumbling performance in the semi-final by Bolt did not help his case either. But it was Bolt’s show at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing on Sunday. It was here that the Jamaican had clinched two Olympic gold medals and two World records in 2008.
Describing the margin of Bolt’s victory, Yahoo Sports explained it thus: An eyeblink takes a tenth of a second. Bolt’s edge over Gatlin was ten times faster than that.
Bolt completed his race in 9.79 seconds. Gatlin’s earlier semifinal time was 9.77 seconds and he had also come into the race carrying a season best of 9.74 seconds but in the final Bolt was able to power himself across the finish line by a narrow margin that was too for the naked eye.
Canada’s Andre de Grasse and Trayvon Bromell of America were both awarded bronze medals in 9.92secs.
