BJP’s rise in northeast India

May 23, 2016 by Nava Thakuria Leave a Comment

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Sonowal and GogoiAnti-incumbency wave against the 15 years old Congress government at Dispur, roaring assurances over curbing on Bangladeshi (read Muslim) migrants and the fast-paced development etc were few major reasons that influenced the electorate of Assam in northeast India to make the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) victorious in the recently concluded State Assembly polls.

After the poll debacles in Delhi and Bihar (also in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry & Kerala Assembly elections), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally found a reason to smile as the electorate of Assam, where the saffron party won seven seats in the last Parliamentary elections, gave thumps up to his party along with its alliances an absolute majority.

Need not to mention that Assam, unlike many elections in the last three decades of turmoil, witnessed a peaceful electoral battle for its 126 members State Legislative Assembly with two phases of polling on 4 & 11 April, where altogether  1,064 candidates tried their lucks. Moreover, for the first time two national (also powerful & resourceful) political parties with a few regional parties joined in the polls, where the State voters exercised their franchises with as high as 83 percent (out of 1.92 crore) turnout to overthrow the ruling Congress.

The BJP along with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) saw a convincing victory with  86 legislators, where the Congress was restricted to only 26 seats (the party won 78 seats in
2011 Assembly elections). The electorate with the high influence of popular Modi wave not only ended the era of Tarun Gogoi’s uninterrupted 15 years rule, but also defeated a number of Congress veterans.

Once termed as a party of Brahman and Bania (trader), the BJP alone won 60 seats, where as it had only five legislators got won in the last  Assembly elections. Energized as the BJP’s alliance partner, the AGP won 14 seats (10 seats in 2011 polls) and  the BPF succeeded in 12 seats (same with last Assembly polls, though it was with Congress that time).

With the Congress, the other losing party was the Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which could succeed  only in 13 constituencies in contrast to 18 seats in 2011 polls. A known
sympathizer to Bangladeshi migrants in Assam, Moulana Ajmal, who is a Parliamentarian from Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency, too lost from South Salmara constituency.

Some of the important winners include outgoing chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Assembly speaker Pranab Gogoi, BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal,  AGP president Atul Bora, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former State ministers Brindaban Goswami,  Pradip Hazarika, Chandra Mohan Patowary, Phani Bhusan Choudhury,   former All Assam Students’ Union leader Tapan Gogoi etc. All four seats in greater Guwahati area were won by BJP candidates namely  Atul Bora (senior) from Dispur constituency, Siddhartha Bhattacharya from Guwahati East, Ramendra Narayan Kalita from Guwahati West and Himanta Biswa Sarma from Jalukbari constituency. Guwahati’s
BJP Parliamentarian Bijaya Chakrabarty’s daughter Suman Haripriya also won from Hajo constituency.

Among prominent losers from the Congress include former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, former State ministers like Pradyut Bordoloi, Gautam Roy, Sarat Barkataki, Bharat Chandra Narah, Atowa Munda, Chandan Kumar Sarkar, Nurzamal Sarkar, Tanka Bahadur Rai,  Prithibi Majhi, Bishmita Gogoi,  Ajit Singh, Siddique Ahmed, Pranati Phukan etc.

Congress veteran Gogoi, who won from Titabor constituency, accepted the defeat of his party and  affirmed to play the role of constrictive opposition in the  Assembly. On the other hand, PM Modi  thanked the people of Assam for helping his party for winning and commented that Assam elections win for BJP was ‘historic by all standards’.

The saffron party leaders also promised that it would urgently seal the border  with Bangladesh, complete the NRC without a single illegal migrant, clear a huge volume of lands belonged to Vaishnavite Satras under encroachment, initiate for all round development with 24×7 power & water supply, ensure 100 percent irrigation coverage of arable lands, offer employment to 25 lakh youths, withdraw oral interviews for 3rd & 4th category government  jobs in the State etc. It now expects all possible help & cooperation from the Centre to the new government at Dispur under the leadership of Sonowal.

EC discusses Delhi poll preparedness, dates on Monday

January 9, 2015 by Priya Rana Leave a Comment

Kejriwal

The ‘full’ Election Commission led by CEC V. S. Sampath met at its headquarters in New Delhi Friday apparently to discuss preparedness for Assembly polls in the capital.

Electoral officers however, termed the meeting as a usual exercise held twice –Friday and Saturday- in a week. Sources told News Hour India after the meeting that the dates for fresh polls for Delhi Legislative Assembly may now be announced on Monday in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting in the national capital on Saturday. As per the law, the Model Code of conduct will come into force immediately after announcement of election schedule.

Even as Congress and AAP have declared their candidates, BJP’s process to select candidates for the crucial polls will take off with Modi’s rally on January 10.

BJP, which emerged as the second largest party in the 2013 elections, is likely to complete the selection of its candidates by January 18 in order to give them sufficient time to campaign in their respective constituencies.

Meanwhile, AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal, who stunned the nation with his landslide victory in the last Assembly polls, has sharpened attack on PM Modi. Kejriwal today held a press conference in the capital and threw a Googly at Modi by asking whether he would keep BJP’s promise made in the last election of announcing full statehood to Delhi or the Prime Minister will take a ‘U-turn’ on this issue too. Kejriwal has also been lampooning the BJP over its promise of a reduction of 30 per cent in electricity charge in its manifesto for the last Assembly elections.

The elections will be a litmus test for the Aam Aadmi Party that has seen a slide in its popularity since Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi chief minister on February 14, 2013, after ruling for 49 days. Delhi has been without a CM since then.

In an apparent bid to corner BJP a day ahead of Prime Minister’s rally, AAP has launched a Twitter campaign called #DelhiasksPMModi.

If sources are to be believed, the capital’s date with elections might fall in mid-February. Congress party that was ousted out of power in the last Assembly elections has already promised support to AAP if the need arises.

In the 2013 elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly, BJP bagged 32 seats, AAP 28 seats while Congress won 8 seats.

shakeel ahmedNEW DELHI: Congress party has cleared its stand on the 18 demands of Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on taking support for forming government in Delhi. The party has also sent a formal reply to the Aam Aadmi Party on its letter. Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed told media today that 16 out of the 18 demands of the AAP were related to administration which it can tackle after it forms government in Delhi.

Among the remaining two demands are giving Delhi full statehood, which even Congress promised in its manifesto and would support AAP if it took up the issue with the central government, Shakeel Ahmed said.

Speaking on AAP’s demand for a Jan Lokpal in Delhi, Shakeel Ahmed said that there was already a Lokayukta Act in the capital that was working well and even then if AAP wanted amendments in it, Congress would back it provided, it is in compliance with the Lokpal Bill passed by the Parliament.

Anna Hazare targets Congress over Jan Lokpal Bill

AnnaRALEGAN SIDDHI: Veteran social activist Anna Hazare today launched a no holds barred attack against Congress on the first day of his indefinite fast to press for a strong Jan Lokpal Bill. Hazare launched the ‘do or die agitation’ outside Yadavbaba Temple in Ralegan Siddhi today morning.
The social activist said that public expressed its anger by routing Congress in Assembly polls as the government had been betraying the country on Jan Lokpal bill for the last two years.

A campaign led by Hazare for the last one year has been compelling the government to create an ombudsman, which would prosecute corrupt politicians and bureaucrats.

Hazare also insisted that Congress should take a lesson from the Assembly poll results and bring Jan Lokpal Bill in the ongoing winter session. Otherwise, public would once again teach a lesson to the Centre-ruling party in upcoming general elections which is due in May, he added.

The anti-graft crusader also alleged that the UPA government had no intentions to make a corruption free country.

Anna HazareRALEGAN SIDDHI: Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has begun his indefinite fast in his village Ralegan Siddhi to press his demand for Jan Lokpal Bill. Hazare has called the fast a ‘do or die agitation’ and demanded the Rajya Sabha to pass the bill in the ongoing 12-day winter session ending on December 20.

While announcing his fast on Monday, the veteran social activist said that if the government would not take cognizance of his indefinite fast during this Winter Session he would make sure the agitation gets intense.

Over the past year, India has been transfixed by a campaign led by Anna Hazare to force the government to create an ombudsman, which would prosecute corrupt politicians and bureaucrats.

Hazare’s initial hunger strike brought millions of sympathisers out on streets and forced the government into a series of humiliating U-turns.

sensex-upMUMBAI: Indian stock markets leaped to a record high while rupee rose to a 4-month high against the dollar. The upswing is seen as a result of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s decisive mandate in the Assembly elections in at least three out of four states.

The market is hopeful that the BJP under its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will also wrest power from the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The markets feel that a good showing by the BJP would provide much-needed political stability and therefore the required reforms.

The Sensex rose 2.3% in early trade to 21,483.74 points intra-day—an all-time high—while the 50-share Nifty rose to 6,415.25 points—a lifetime high. The Sensex later closed at 21326.42 points, up 1.57%, from the last close while Nifty closed at 6317.35 points, up 1.66% .

Overall, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex and the broader index Nifty on the National Stock Exchange rose to record highs.

No response from BJP national leadership: Yeddyurappa on return to saffron outfit

YeddyurappaBENGALURU: A day after BJP won a landslide victory in three state Assembly polls and emerged as a single largest party in Delhi, Karnataka Janatha Paksha (KJP) chief BS Yeddyurappa seems in a great rush to rejoin his former party. Yeddyurappa had written to BJP patriarch LK Advani expressing his great desire to be part of the BJP-led combine few days back.

But, despite numerous efforts by BJP’s Karnataka unit to bring him back, party’s central leadership has not contacted Yeddyurappa as yet.

“I have not received any such message,” Yeddyurappa told reporters after the KJP executive meeting in Bengaluru today.

The former Karnataka chief minister rejected the reports that he had been putting conditions saying, “I have not asked for any favour from central leaders”.

Amid reports that BJP top brass has decided to invite him, the KJP chief said he would await their message to know their mind before deciding on his homecoming.

“I have not received any message. I will wait…See what exactly is in their minds and then we will decide,” said Yeddyurappa.

Yeddyurappa headed the BJP’s first ever government in the south and turned a rebel after he was forced to resign from the post of chief minister in 2011 following his indictment in the report on illegal mining by the then Karnataka Lokayukta.

BJP’s former strongman in the south described himself as an admirer of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who had played significant role in BJP pulling out hat-trick in the assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

The KJP chief also hailed Aam Admi Party’s outstanding debut in Delhi Assembly elections. He underlined that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had set an example, adding that the victory showed that any bonafide struggle for people would always pay dividends.

Farooq AbdullahNEW DELHI: Defending Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over party’s debacle in Assembly elections, Union Minister Farooq Abdullah said today that the defeat was an outcome of inflation and corruption.

Interestingly, Farooq said that the entire country needed to introspect along with the Congress party in view of the colossal defeat. He did not elaborate on what he actually meant by this.

The Minister, whose National Conference supports UPA government at the Centre, also insisted that he would back Congress on whatever decision it would take regarding the prime ministerial candidate.

NC is an alliance partner of UPA and is ruling Jammu and Kashmir with Congress.

LIVE: Voting begins in Rajasthan: Gehlot, Raje in tough fight

December 1, 2013 by newshourindia Leave a Comment

rajasthan_votingRAJASTHAN: Voting has begun for the 199 Assembly seats in Rajasthan. People started queuing up outside polling booths since early morning today to exercise their franchise. Polling opened at the 47,223 polling booths spread across the state.

Over four crore voters are likely to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 2,087 candidates. Ruling Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is in a stiff fight against BJP’s state chief and CM candidate Vasundhara Raje.

While Gehlot believes people will vote him to power again because of the good work his government has done, Raje is the view that the anti-incumbency factor and corruption allegations against the ruling state government will propel her to power.

Congress and BJP have fielded 200 candidates each, BSP 195, CPI(M) 38, CPI 23, NCP 16, other parties 666 and Independents 758 (including Churu Assembly constituency).

Ashok Gehlot is contesting from his home turf of Sardarpura seat in Jodhpur district against BJP’s Rajput candidate Shambhu Singh Khetasar.

Vasundhara Raje is contesting from the Jhalarapatan seat in Hadauti region against Congress’ woman NSUI leader and former MLA Meenakshi Chandrawat.

Both Gehlot and Raje cast their votes early morning today.

A total of 1,19,272 police personnel, including 509 companies of Central Protection Force (38,175 CRPF personnel) have been deployed to ensure free and fair.
