5th ODI: South Africa beat India by 214 runs at Wankhede, win series

Virat Kohli AB de Villiers

South Africa won their first ODI series in India after defeating the hosts by 214 runs in the 5th and final match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium today. It was evident right from the first over of the game that the Proteas were playing to win the title. They put up a mammoth total of 438 runs for the loss of 4 wickets making the Indian bowling attack look lackluster after captain A. B. de Villiers won the toss and decided to bat first.

South Africa’s score of 438 runs is the joint third highest total ever scored in a One Day match. As many as 3 Proteas batsmen – Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers – scored tons. This was only the second time in a One Day match that a team had 3 players scoring hundred runs.

Ab de Villiers’ 119 came off just 61 balls. Quinton de Kock faced 87 balls to score 109 runs and Faf du Plessis’ 133 came off just 115 deliveries before he was retired hurt. The two Indian seamers Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma gave away 106 and 84 (7 overs) runs. Indian fielders dropped at least 4 catches at a time when the South African batsmen were unstoppable.

None of the Indian batsmen barring Ajinkya Rahane responded to the huge challenge posed by the visitors. Rahane scored 87 in 58 balls but the team needed many such performances.

Virat Kohli takes India to World T20 final

DHAKA (BANGLADESH): India beat South Africa by 6 wickets in the semi-final of the World T20 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh, making the final of the tournament an all sub-continental affair.
Team India plays Sri Lanka in the final of the T20 tournament on April 6.

Harsha Bhogle asked Virat Kohli at the post match interaction how he does this all the time. And that in a way summed up what could have happened in the match. Batting first, South Africa scored 172 runs. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane gave a steady start but it was Viral Kohli and his splendid batting that guided India past the total of 172 runs without much to worry about. He scored 72 runs from 44 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes.

South Africa had some quality bowlers like Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel but they could not stop Indian batsmen from scoring runs.

“Virat is a splendid World Class player and a quality team like India deserves to be in the final,” South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said at the end of the match.

Virat Kohli has made the highest runs for India since 2012 in matches that India have won. Harsha Bhogle asked MS Dhoni if it was intentional to let Kohli score the winning runs and the Indian captain nodded in agreement. The background was this: Suresh Raina got out in the second last over of the match and Dhoni came in and was on strike for the last ball when the score was tied. He defended it without any intention of running for a single. This was to allow Virat to come back on strike in the last over and score the winning runs.

Virat Kohli hit a boundary of the first ball of the last over taking India past South Africa’s total of 172 runs.

“Virat has been very consistent and not many players have such consistency. Youngsters should learn from him,” MS Dhoni said in praise of the Indian vice-captain.

India now play Sri Lanka in the final and one cannot ignore the comparisons being made with the 2011 World cup final in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Virat Kohli’s century powers India to six-wicket victory against Bangladesh

indexFATULLAH, BANGLADESH: India’s stand-in captain Virat Kohli proved his mettle by steering his side to a comprehensive six-wicket victory against Bangladesh in the 2014 Asia Cup at Fatullah, Bangladesh. India were 52-2 in the 13th over at one stage but Virat Kohli (136) and Ajinkya Rahane (73)’s partnership of 213 runs for the third wicket made the hosts’ total of 279 look like an easy target.
Virat Kohli who hit his 18th ODI hundred of which 13 have come during a run chase, made little of Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim’s 117. Kohli and Rahane also ensured that the terrible jinx of losing six out of last eight matches is broken for India.
Starting cautiously, Kohli and Rahane, steadily built up a partnership till the ball started coming well and Bangladesh bowlers could hardly put a dent on their plans. Addressing the post match press conference, Ajinkya Rahane, later revealed that the plan was to play straight and as much as possible. Starting the first match of the series is good for momentum, Rahane said.

The crowd at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium started leaving after the Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s century and by the time India reached the winning total of 280 for 4, there were very few spectators left in the stands. This in a way sums up the effect Kohli had on the game.

Bangladesh players played well. Nothing went wrong for them. It’s just that sometimes, something special happens on the ground and Virat Kohli did that thing for India. This is how Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak reacted on the defeat.
